Actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut on Friday announced that her movie Emergency would be streaming on Netflix from March 17.
The movie, which was embroiled in controversies surrounding its censor certification and charges of portraying the Sikh community in a false light, finally released in theatres on January 17 after a series of postponements.
Apart from acting in the title role, Ranaut directed and produced the film, which is set during the Emergency era and features her as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Sharing a still from the movie alongside an archival image of Gandhi on Instagram, Ranaut captioned the post, "17th March releasing on @netflix."
A BJP MP from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi constituency, Ranaut’s film delves into the 21-month-long Emergency imposed in 1975 under Gandhi’s leadership.
After its cinema release, Emergency was opposed in Punjab, in which it did not run owing to demonstrations orchestrated by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and other Sikh groups. It was also banned by several politicians, something that Ranaut has criticized as "complete harassment of art and the artist."
The movie is an ensemble piece, with an all-star cast that includes Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Milind Soman, and late Satish Kaushik. It is supported by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films.
