Renowned actress Penelope Cruz, celebrated for her role in the upcoming film 'Ferrari,' recently shared insights into her approach to parenting and the protective stance she takes towards her two children, Luna (10) and Leo (12), whom she shares with actor-husband Javier Bardem.
In an interview with Elle for their February 2024 issue, Cruz expressed her commitment to allowing her children autonomy when it comes to stepping into the public eye. She emphasized that the decision to pursue a more public profession should be entirely up to Luna and Leo, and they can discuss it when they feel ready.
Cruz, featured on the cover of the magazine, revealed a protective measure she employs by not allowing her children to have phones. She pointed out the vulnerability of young minds to manipulation and the potential negative consequences, highlighting the importance of safeguarding their mental well-being.
The actress also delved into her professional journey, noting that a significant portion of her roles revolves around motherhood, divorce, abandonment, or characters dealing with various facets of parenthood. She credited Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, a frequent collaborator, for recognizing her inherent motherly instinct even from a young age.
Reflecting on her desire for motherhood, Cruz shared, "Ever since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted kids. But I knew I wanted them older. I wanted to wait until I felt I was ready. I was sure it would be the most important thing I would do in my life.”
In a previous interview with CBS Sunday Morning in December 2021, Cruz expressed concerns about the impact of social media on children's developing brains. She hinted at her inclination to delay her kids' entry into the realm of social media until they reach the age of 16, emphasizing the lack of protection for young minds and the potential influence on self-perception and bullying.
Penelope Cruz's approach to parenting reflects her dedication to shielding her children from the potential pitfalls of early exposure to the public eye and the digital world, prioritizing their well-being and autonomy.
