BAFTA Nominations Unveiled: 'Oppenheimer' and 'Poor Things' Lead, 'Barbie' Falls Short

Following closely behind is Yorgos Lanthimos' 'Poor Things,' securing 11 nominations, including best film and a nod for Emma Stone in the actress category. Despite the achievements of 'Oppenheimer' and 'Poor Things,' Variety notes that the noteworthy aspect of the nominations is the conspicuous absence of Greta Gerwig's blockbuster sensation 'Barbie' in several key categories.

Renowned filmmaker Christopher Nolan's latest creation, 'Oppenheimer,' seems poised to dominate the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards with an impressive 13 nominations. This atomic bomb biopic, now Nolan's most-nominated film on home soil and his UK box office triumph, is recognized in categories such as best film, director (potentially earning Nolan his first BAFTA in this category), leading actor for Cillian Murphy, and supporting nods for Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt, according to reports from Variety.

Initially tied with 'Oppenheimer' and 'Killers of the Flower Moon' with 15 Longlist slots, 'Barbie' saw only five of these translating into nominations. Margot Robbie received a leading actress nod, and Ryan Gosling earned a best supporting actor nomination, but the film missed out on best film and director categories, causing considerable surprise.

With its five nominations, 'Barbie' shares the spotlight with 'Saltburn,' recognized for performances by Barry Keoghan, Rosamund Pike, and Jacob Elordi. Greta Gerwig, like Emerald Fennell, was excluded from the director nominations, making Justine Triet the lone female director among the six nominees.

In other notable mentions, 'Killers of the Flower Moon' and 'The Zone of Interest' each garnered nine nominations, with Jonathan Glazer's Holocaust drama losing only one of its 10 Longlist slots. Sandra Huller represents 'The Zone of Interest' in the supporting actress category, while also securing a leading actress nomination for 'Anatomy of a Fall.'

'The Holdovers' and 'Maestro' boast seven nominations, including best film, while 'All of Us Strangers' earned six nominations, featuring Claire Foy and Paul Mescal in supporting categories. The highly anticipated BAFTA Film Awards ceremony is set to take place on February 18 at London’s Royal Festival Hall.
