Singer Pawandeep Rajan, who won the title of Indian Idol season 12, is said to be "stable and conscious" after suffering critical injuries in a road accident that took place in the early hours of Monday in Amroha district of Uttar Pradesh.
Rajan, an Uttarakhand native, is undergoing treatment at Noida hospital for serious head injuries and fractures.
In an official release, Fortis Hospital, Noida confirmed that the singer has been admitted under the watch of its orthopaedic experts after the accident, which resulted in "multiple limb fractures."
"He is stable and conscious now. He will be operated upon in a sequence of surgeries. Our clinical team is very closely following him and providing him with all the medical care he needs," the hospital stated in a release.
The accident occurred between 2:30 am on National Highway-9, opposite Chaupala Chauraha overbridge in Gajraula, not far from the office of Circle Officer. As per police, the SUV on which Pawandeep was traveling crashed into a parked canter truck that was broken down at the roadside.
Also hurt in the accident were the driver of the vehicle, Rahul Singh, and another passenger, Ajay Mehra. Bystanders took all three to a local hospital before they were referred to a more equipped facility for further treatment.
Inspector Akhilesh Pradhan, who is in charge of the Gajraula police station, confirmed that the vehicles involved have been impounded and an investigation is ongoing.
Officials and eyewitnesses have also indicated that the site where the accident took place is famous for traffic jams as there are illegal parking places and an unauthorized taxi stand that create frequent jams, resulting in accidents.
Pawandeep, a native of Champawat district of Uttarakhand, became a national sensation when he won Sony TV's famous singing show Indian Idol in its 2021 season.
As news of the accident emerged, fans arrived at the crash site, and Rajan's family hurried to arrange his transportation to the Noida hospital.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami was worried about the incident and sent his prayers for Pawandeep's recovery.
