In a recent interview, actress Gina Gershon, who starred alongside Cruise in the 1988 film Cocktail, revealed a funny mistake from their on-screen romance. During a live appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Gershon shared how she once accidentally kneed Cruise in the nose while filming a sex scene, very nearly causing an unusual injury.
The 62-year-old actress shared the anecdote when asked by a viewer if she and Cruise ever dated in real life. She said they hadn't but added that Cocktail was her first love scene with Cruise on screen.
She described Cruise as a very thoughtful actor on set but admitted to one time where she wasn't as much. Describing the scene, she said, "At one point, when he was under the covers, I told him that I was very ticklish and asked him not to do something specific." She went on, "In one take he grabbed my stomach unexpectedly, and I ended up kneeing him in the nose. I thought I hit him really hard. He reassured me that it was his fault and was very protective and understanding."
Asked if there was a chance for an off-screen romance, Gershon laughed it off, saying Cruise was at the time married to Mimi Rogers, who "was on the set every day.".
Gershon remembered fondly their on-screen chemistry, saying, "We did kiss as much as we could," and described the film, directed by Roger Donaldson and based on Heywood Gould's book, as one she considers a defining project in her career. Cocktail also starred Bryan Brown and Elisabeth Shue and is about a business student who becomes a bartender to make ends meet.
