Halle Berry Reflects on Hollywood’s Changing Standards for Women Over 40

"I never thought I'd be doing this as a career, and then at this age and stage still being able to work at the level that I work on," Berry said.

Halle Berry, a Hollywood icon, with over thirty years in the entertainment business, commented on things that have changed for women in Hollywood. Indeed, she reflected and said that it was surprising that after having been around for such a long time, she is still able to do work at this level.

"I never thought I'd be doing this as a career, and then at this age and stage still being able to work at the level that I work on," Berry said.

She said that her long-lived career was credited to living in an era when women can have extended longevity in Hollywood. "But I came along at the right time when women are having longevity. There was a time when you were 40, you were kind of done. So it's so nice to be a part of Hollywood now," she told E! News.

Berry, who co-stars with Mark Wahlberg in the new thriller "The Union," plays a woman whose character is recruited by a former high school sweetheart for a high-stakes U.S. intelligence mission.

She described it as "fun" to play such a storyline, which reminded her of her own younger years. "It was fun. I think many of us fantasize about that one that got away or what if I would have stayed with my high school sweetheart, what would my life be like?" Berry said.

Being the mom of Nahla, her daughter with Gabriel Aubry, and son Maceo-Robert, with Olivier Martinez, she has been quite conscious of her health since her teens. According to her, the secret lay in careful management of the diet and getting enough rest.

"I think being diagnosed with diabetes when I was 19 years old has kept me away from the number one aging substance, which is sugar," Berry noted.
She added, "And then I think it's managing to get enough rest, prioritising your sleep and your health and your wellbeing is important. And it's hard to do that sometimes."
