The celebrated music composer AR Rahman recently shared a touching video of the triumphant Indian men's cricket team celebrating their T20 World Cup victory to the strings of his iconic "Vande Mataram." During the felicitation at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, captained by Rohit Sharma, R.svg, the team danced in jubilation and took a victory lap to mark their historic triumph in 2007.
It was a moment that was also captured by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, as players like Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah sang Rahman's "Maa Tujhe Salaam" with great enthusiasm and the singing reverberated across the stadium. Sharing the 41-second clip on his social media platform, Rahman put out a trophy, heart, handshake and clapping hands emoticons to indicate his thrill at the team's tribute through his 1997 composition.
Filmmaker Bharatbala reflected on its enduring impact: "Maa Tujhe Salaam" is an immortal unifying anthem even after 27 years. Originally, the song was part of Rahman's album "Vande Mataram," which came out at a time when India celebrated her Golden Jubilee of independence. Today, after so many years, this song is still used to awaken the Indians' patriotic fervor and unify them.
It was right on the verge of the T20 World Cup final at Bridgetown in Barbados, where India captured victory from South Africa by seven runs—proof enough of the great change the song had brought to national pride and unity.
