Actor Vijayakanth Conferred Padma Bhushan Posthumously

The late Tamil superstar-turned-politician and leader of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), Vijayakanth, has been posthumously honored with the Padma Bhushan, according to recent reports.

Born as Narayanan Vijayaraj Alagaraswami on August 25, 1952, Vijayakanth was widely recognized by his screen name. He passed away on December 28, 2023. During his illustrious career, Vijayakanth played a prominent role as the leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly from May 2011 to February 2016.

With a successful career in the film industry, Vijayakanth acted in over 150 movies and was awarded the Kalaimamani award in 2001, the highest civilian award in Tamil Nadu. Known by the moniker 'Karuppu MGR' or 'Black MGR' for his altruistic nature, Vijayakanth was also admired for his advocacy for equality in food provision on film sets. The Padma Bhushan recognition is a posthumous tribute to his significant contributions to both the entertainment and political spheres.
