Demise of DMDK Founder and Renowned Actor 'Captain' Vijayakanth at the Age of 71

Officials at Miot Hospital confirmed Vijayakanth's death, stating, "Captain Vijayakanth was on ventilator support following his admission for pneumonia. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, he passed away in the morning on Dec 28."

Renowned Tamil actor and former leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu assembly, Vijayakanth, fondly known as the "Captain," passed away on Thursday at the age of 71 in a private hospital in Chennai. The actor, founder of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), was admitted for the treatment of pneumonia and was on ventilator support. He had also tested positive for Covid-19.

Vijayakanth played a significant role in Tamil Nadu politics, challenging the dominance of former Chief Ministers J. Jayalalithaa and M. Karunanidhi. He founded the DMDK in 2005 and served as the Leader of the Opposition twice, representing the constituencies of Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam. He leaves behind his wife, Premalatha, and two sons.

As an actor, Vijayakanth earned the title "Puratchi Kalaignar," meaning revolutionary artist. His debut film, 'Inikkum Ilamai,' released in 1979, and he went on to become a prominent action icon in the 1980s and 1990s. His movie 'Sattam Oru Iruttarai' was a superhit and remade in multiple languages.

Vijayakanth appeared in 154 movies, making him one of the most beloved figures in the Tamil film industry. He was noted for declaring that he would not accept donations for his political party. Prime Minister Modi had referred to him as a friend during an NDA leaders' meeting, and Vijayakanth was both admired and criticized for his actions in public, particularly toward journalists. His contributions to Tamil cinema and politics have left an indelible mark, and his passing is mourned by fans and colleagues alike.
