This year a total of 9.34 lakh candidates appeared for the examination that was held in four sessions to provide the students with an opportunity to improve their scores. The rankings of the aspirants were calculated based on the best of four session's NTA scores in accordance with the policy
The Joint Entrance Examination 2021 was conducted in 13 languages and the phase four sessions were held in February, March, July, and August to September, respectively. The third and fourth sessions were delayed due to the massive covid-19 outbreak.
How are the rankings for the JEE 2021 calculated?
The process of calculating the ranking includes the deriving of raw scores for the examination and using the normalization process of the calculated raw marks. The marks of the session in which the candidate got the highest scores are taken into account.
JEE Main Raw Score = [Total questions right (out of 60)X4 – Total incorrect Questions (out of 60)] + Total right questions (out of 15) X 4
The calculation of the raw scores requires candidates to calculate the marks of right total right questions i.e. total rightly attempted question multiplied by marks 4 for each right question and deduct the negative marking of 1 for each wrongly attempted question. For the numerical questions, there was no negative marking, so candidates can right away add the marks obtained for each correctly attempted numerical i.e. 4 to the previously calculated scores of the other questions.

Further to calculate the percentile (NTA Score), the candidates need to follow the normalization criteria. The percentile calculation is taken until 7 decimal points for avoiding ties between the scores of candidates. Based on these derived Percentile scores, the ranks are further calculated.
Just in case of a tie the rankings are resolved by comparing first the NTA score in Mathematics. In case the scores remain the same it is further compared with the ranks in Physics and if the scores still remain same, the candidates are given the same rank.
