Delivering her seventh consecutive Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled significant projects and financial allocations for Bihar and Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday. These states, whose governing parties are allies with the BJP at the national level, have been advocating for special category status and additional funding since their division. Bihar's JD(U) and Andhra's TDP-Janasena are crucial partners for the BJP at the Centre.
In her announcement, FM Sitharaman introduced two major Expressways for Bihar: the Patna-Purnia Expressway and the Buxar-Bhagalpur Expressway. Additionally, two land bridges over the Ganga River will be constructed in Buxar District. These initiatives, with a combined investment of Rs 26,000 crore, aim to significantly enhance Bihar's road infrastructure and promote economic growth. Furthermore, she revealed plans for new airports, medical colleges, and sports facilities in Bihar. "The Bihar government’s request for external assistance from multilateral banks will be prioritized," she added.
Addressing Andhra Pradesh's financial needs, Sitharaman emphasized the government's commitment to supporting the state as outlined in the Andhra Pradesh Re-organisation Act. "We will ensure special financial support through multilateral developmental agencies, with Rs 15,000 crore allocated for the current fiscal year and additional funds in the future," she stated.
Sitharaman also reiterated the government's dedication to the timely completion of the Polavaram project, a vital undertaking for Andhra Pradesh that also contributes to the nation's food security. "Grants will be provided for the underdeveloped regions of north-coastal Andhra Pradesh," she concluded.
