Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of the late Russian dissident Alexei Navalny, has expressed concerns about the unpredictable nature of Russian President Vladimir Putin, suggesting that the possibility of him resorting to nuclear weapons cannot be discounted.
In an interview with DPA, Navalnaya conveyed uncertainty about Putin's intentions, stating, "We don't know what to expect from him. He probably would do it." She drew parallels between Putin's unpredictability and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, expressing surprise at his decision despite strong ties between the two nations. Navalnaya remarked on Putin's tactics of instilling fear, stating, "He frightens people, keeps them in fear. Nobody knows what Putin is going to do next."
The Navalnys, renowned opposition figures in Russia, have long challenged Putin's regime. Alexei Navalny, a vocal critic of Putin, passed away in February 2022 under contentious circumstances, with suspicions of foul play surrounding his death.
Navalnaya also addressed recent arrests of suspected Russian spies in Europe, suggesting they indicate Putin's ongoing aggressive tactics. She criticized Europe's delayed recognition of the threat posed by Moscow and emphasized the need for robust Western support in confronting Putin's regime.
Despite facing risks, Navalnaya remains resolute in her opposition to Putin and expresses a desire to return to Russia. She received the German Freedom Prize of the Media, highlighting international recognition of her activism.
Regarding the Ukraine conflict, Navalnaya acknowledges the complexity of finding a resolution and hopes for eventual reconciliation between Russians and Ukrainians. She underscores the fatigue within Russian society over the war and calls for continued resistance against government mobilization efforts.
Navalnaya concludes by emphasizing that Russia comprises more than just Putin, with many anti-war and anti-Putin activists deserving of support from the West.
