An autopsy report on Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar's body revealed that the intelligence-based ground raid by Israel Defence Forces in the southern Gaza region killed him with a gunshot wound to his head.
Sinwar was the head of the politburo of Hamas, who was discovered by the Israel Defense Forces in the Tel al-Sultan area of Rafah. The Israel Defense Forces' 828 Brigade found Sinwar's body in their operation.
Israeli soldiers cut off one of Sinwar's fingers for DNA confirmation, CNN says. Sinwar's body was found when soldiers reportedly discovered a body resembling him in his hideout. A DNA profile from the time he served in an Israeli prison, where he spent two decades until his release in a 2011 prisoner-swap deal, was used to confirm his identity.
The chief pathologist at Israel's National Center of Forensic Medicine confirmed the method used in verifying Sinwar's identity, according to CNN.
" After the laboratory made the profile, we compared it with the profile that Sinwar had in the term that he was serving here as a prisoner, so then we could finally identify him by his DNA," Kugel told CNN.
The soldiers had attempted first to identify him through his dental records, Kugel said, but that was not conclusive.
Videos circulating on social media show Israeli troops searching the hideout. In one video, two soldiers are seen next to a body -Sinwar's is believed to be-the index finger of the left hand severed.
However, video footage circulating through various social media shows Sinwar's body with all fingers intact and later with one missing.
Kugel further disclosed that Sinwar was shot dead through a head gunshot wound. Though the Hamas leader had other injuries, such as those from a tank shell, Kugel said the fatal blow was by the bullet.
The video uploaded online also shows destruction to Sinwar's face, with parts of his skull having been blown off. Such findings align with those established by the chief pathologist.
The house, according to reports, was hit by a tank shell from Israeli forces before a ground operation was launched by the raiders to assess damage and to look for survivors.
Hamas is looking for a new political leader who has experience in operating from outside Gaza. The new leader should be good at replacing their fallen leaders quickly and efficiently. A brother of Yahaya is expected to replace him, Mohammad Sinwar.
Yahya Sinwar was the brain behind the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel that killed over 1,200, forcing Israel to open up an operation in Gaza that would kill over 40,000 people over a year.
