A 36-year-old Sikh man, Gurpreet Singh, was shot by police in Los Angeles in the middle of a road. Video released by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) captured Singh doing Gatka, the traditional Sikh martial art.
The police stated that he was carrying a machete outside Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles. He was killed after he failed to obey and even tried to strike at the officers. The machete was found to be a "khanda"—a double-edged sword Indian martial arts.
The episode took place on July 13, after several calls to 911 indicated a man brandishing a huge blade at passerby at the crowded corner of Figueroa Street and Olympic Boulevard.
Authorities supplemented that Singh dumped his car in the center of the road and even tried to cut his own tongue at one time. "Officers issued several commands for Singh to release the weapon," authorities added.
When officers moved in, he hurled a bottle at them and attempted to run. He drove wildly during the chase and finally crashed into another police car, stopping near Figueroa and 12th Streets. He attacked officers with the blade and was shot.
The police reaffirmed, "A machete, two feet long, was recovered at the scene and booked as evidence."
Singh was hospitalized but died of his gunshot wounds. No civilians or officers were injured in the shooting.
The incident is under investigation.
