During the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China, the warmth among three world leaders — Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping — soon made global headlines.
In America, though, the responses were divided. Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has been in the habit of regularly criticizing former President Donald Trump, took the opportunity to make a political jab.
Retweeting a video of the leaders' lighthearted exchange, Newsom tweeted on X: "But have no fear, Trump is sending the Guard to Chicago.”
The video indicated Prime Minister Modi and President Putin walking arm in arm prior to walking up to Xi Jinping, with all three bursting into laughter as they stood united. Yet another video that was shared widely on the internet contained Modi drawing Putin and Xi in towards him in a symbolic display of friendliness.
Newsom made his comment in the wake of Trump's recent suggestion that he would use National Guard troops in cities such as Chicago and New York — a plan already receiving criticism from Democrats.
