During a visit to New Delhi Wednesday, Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus voiced his country's aspiration for strong relations with India and other neighbors, underlining that these relations should be based upon "fairness and equality."
Yunus said during a televised speech marking the first month of the formation of the interim government that soon after he was sworn in as the head of the administration, he received congratulatory calls from several foreign heads, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
"We want good relations with India and other neighboring countries, but that relationship should be on the basis of fairness and equality," he added.
Yunus also mentioned that Bangladesh has already initiated high-level bilateral dialogue with India on flood-related issues.
"I have also started a process for the revival of SAARC to encourage regional cooperation in South Asia," he added.
The SAARC, or South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, includes the countries of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
"We would want the world to recognize that Bangladesh is a respectable democracy." Yunus concluded.
