Donald Trump's deal to buyout Greenland has become deadly serious. There are already republicans in the House of Representatives collecting support towards a new bill that will authorise the US President to enter into formal negotiations towards purchasing Greenland.
The 'Make Greenland Great Again Act' is being circulated to gather co-sponsors for it. As of Monday, the bill already had 10 sponsors. It is being led by Republican congressman Andy Ogles and congresswoman Diana Harshbarger.
It officially confirms that the soon-to-be US President Donald Trump is really interested in buying Greenland and incorporating it into the United States.
He said this more than once during the last couple of weeks, and he had even asked his advisors in 2019 when he was serving his first term as President how he could do this.
President-elect Trump has even warned that under his presidency, the US will not blink an eye the use of military and economic measures to convince Denmark and Greenland if any buyout option is declined by either of them.
Greenland is a matter of US national security and Washington under the Trump administration will go to any extent on matters of national security, Donald Trump said.
Following the historic victory in the US presidential election held on November 5, Donald Trump's Republican Party now holds a majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. This makes it easier for Donald Trump to execute his plans without too many hurdles coming in his way.
In the draft version of the 'Make Greenland Great Again Act,' Congress "hereby authorizes the President, effective at 12:01 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on January 20, 2025, to negotiate seeking entry into the negotiation process of acquisition with the Kingdom of Denmark whereby Greenland will become acquired by the United States."
It further states that "Not later than 5 calendar days after reaching an agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark relating to the acquisition of Greenland by the United States, the President shall transmit to the appropriate congressional committees the agreement, including all related materials and annexes." Should the bill pass, Donald Trump can officially and legally take action as desired to acquire Greenland as soon as he takes office after his inauguration on January 20.
Greenland is a Danish colony. The semi-sovereign state depends on the Kingdom of Denmark for matters related to foreign affairs and security. For more than a century now, Denmark governs Greenland, even though independence for the biggest island has been advocated for for decades.
Greenland forms part of the Danish constitution. To allow Greenland to become completely independent and free, Copenhagen must amend its constitution. Amid Donald Trump's threat to buy out Greenland, Denmark's Prime Minister Mute Egede has appealed for a push for the island's full independence.
He has also said that Greenland is not for sale and that the ultimate decision of its future will be have to be taken by the residents of Greenland.
