The US government has reiterated the support for the Israeli leadership amid allegations of genocide against Palestinians in the conflict with Hamas in Gaza.
According to US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, the US stance firmly denies the characterization of events in Gaza as genocide. Sullivan highlighted that this position has been conveyed officially to the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
While taking such a stance, Sullivan also brought to the fore the requirement of Israel taking more measures to protect the innocent civilians of that region.
The conflict in Gaza escalated following significant attacks by Palestinian militants, which incited the Israeli airstrikes and ground operation. The toll this took on the civilians and the humanitarian crisis that it has drawn international criticism for.
South Africa took the matter to the International Court of Justice against Israel for the violation of the Genocide Convention in the conflict. The UN court has ordered Israel to implement protective measures to stop genocide.
Israel constantly refuses to take allegations of genocide, claiming the right to self-defense under attack. In this process, thousands of Palestinians have been reported dead.
At the same time, US officials, especially President Joe Biden, are getting flak due to the support they provide to Israel amid allegations of genocide. Protesters have been seen to shout their opposition during public appearances by the President, questioning US military aid to Israel.
These developments indicate how complicated the conflict is and how difficult it is for both Israel and its allies to thread the needle between the humanitarian and geopolitical dimensions.
