The United States has come out in support of India's role in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine and its efforts toward advancing peace between the two nations, according to Vedant Patel, Deputy Spokesperson for the US State Department.
On Wednesday, Patel refused to comment on a reported visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Ukraine later this month during a press briefing. "I wouldn't be able to tell you about any travel plans of the Prime Minister of India or visits as such," Patel said, referring further questions to Modi's office.
"We are in permanent dialogue with our Indian counterparts on all issues, and of course, we look forward to the involvement of India in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. That is specifically relevant in the context of achieving fair and lasting peace, according to the efforts of our Ukrainian allies in defending their territorial integrity and sovereignty."
According to sources, Prime Minister Modi is likely to visit Poland and Ukraine from August 21 to 23, but there is no official confirmation for the same yet.
Earlier, Modi visited Russia on July 8-9 and met with President Vladimir Putin. His visit to Russia was termed as a "major setback to peace efforts" by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
In his talks with Putin, Modi brought up the question of child casualties in conflicts and said that the killing of so many innocent lives is agonizing. Now, reports are coming in from Kyiv that a missile attack on a children's hospital has killed 37 children.
