The US has said it "won't be fully satisfied" unless there is "meaningful accountability" at the end of India's investigation into an alleged plot to kill a Khalistan activist based in the US.
The US allegations were inquired upon by an Indian team in Washington DC last week during the course of discussions, when an unsealed indictment in a New York court had accused Vikash Yadav, a former officer of the spy agency RAW of plotting the assassination attempt.
We understand that the inquiry committee from India would go on, and we would expect to see further steps based on the conversations last week," Vedant Patel, a spokesperson from the US State Department, said.
"There we continue to expect and want to see accountability based on the results of that investigation and certainly the US won't be fully satisfied until there is meaningful accountability resulting from that investigation.".
Patel never explained or explained what "meaningful accountability" means.
The US Department of Justice submitted an indictment in a New York court in November 2023 against Nikhil Gupta, an Indian citizen, alleging that Gupta tried to arrange the assassination plot of Khalistan activist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun at the behest of an Indian official who was later identified as Yadav.
Gupta is in a New York jail and pleaded not-guilty at his arraignment.
Yadav's indictment said he has told the Indian press that he was a "senior field officer" responsible for "security management" and "intelligence." Yadav previously served in India's Central Reserve Police Force and received "officer training" in "battle craft" and "weapons.".
Yadav was an Indian citizen and lived in India, too. He planned the conspiracy from India only.
