US Aims to Strengthen Economic Ties with India and Tackle Irregular Migration: Rubio to Jaishankar

New US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, meeting for the first time his counterpart External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, wanted to move ahead economic ties with India, along with dealing with issues linked to irregular migration, said a spokesperson to the DHS on Tuesday.

Rubio "emphasised the Trump administration's desire to work with India to advance economic ties and address concerns related to irregular migration", State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said in a readout after the meeting.

The two top diplomats affirmed a shared commitment to continuing to strengthen the India-US partnership, she said.
