The UK government is pressing for a United Nations-led inquiry in the wake of recent unrest that led to the resignation of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

But it made no mention of her plea for asylum.

"The last two weeks in Bangladesh have seen violence and loss of life on a completely unacceptable scale. All parties must now work together to bring peace back with transitional government." What is more, he underlined that the people of Bangladesh deserved a full and independent UN investigation into what happened the past week, adding that the UK remained committed to backing measures that would secure a peaceful, democratic future for the country.

He further stressed that the U.K. and Bangladesh shared very strong people-to-people links, besides shared values of the Commonwealth.

On the contrary, India would provide full logistical support to the UK asylum process of Hasina. She would have a short stay in India until she is relocated.

On Monday, Hasina arrived at Hindon Air Base in Ghaziabad barely a few hours after her resignation, when thousands of protesters stormed and vandalized the 'Ganabhaban,' which is the official residence of the Prime Minister in Dhaka. Reports are coming of more than 100 people having lost their lives, while over 1,000 were injured during the violent police-protester clashes on Sunday.

The student-led movement of non-cooperation had heaped pressure on Hasina's government in the past few weeks. The agitation of students is against the 30 percent job reservation for relatives of the freedom fighters who were instrumental in Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan during the 1971 civil war.
