The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Turkish Parliament announced its intention to deliberate on Sweden's NATO bid in the coming week, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
In a statement released on Friday, the committee outlined its plan to review Sweden's bid on December 26.
Back in October, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan endorsed Sweden's NATO accession protocol and forwarded it to Parliament for consideration. However, the bill necessitates the commission's approval before it undergoes a comprehensive vote in Parliament for ratification.
Following Russia's military intervention in Ukraine in February 2022, both Sweden and Finland applied for NATO membership in May.
Turkey swiftly endorsed Finland's NATO membership in March but has adopted a more cautious approach regarding Sweden's accession. Ankara has called for further reassurances from the Nordic nation regarding Turkey's security concerns before advancing its approval process.
