Steven Cheung, who ran US President-elect Donald Trump's media relations during his campaign and was chief spokesperson, has been selected to run White House communications in the incoming administration.
Trump announced Friday that Cheung "will be returning to the White House as Assistant to the President and Director of Communications.".
He was a Special Assistant to the President and Director of Strategic Response during Donald Trump's first term, tasked with dealing with challenges that arise and planning on responding to those issues that are emerging in the future.
He joined the Trump campaign as its spokesperson making forth incisive statements.
He also spoke directly to the media on behalf of Donald Trump, just as at the time of Donald Trump's trial in Manhattan court in the hush money case.
According to media reports he was part of the inner circle of the Trump campaign with managers, Susan Wiles appointed now as chief of staff to Trump, and Chris LaCivita.
He refined his verbal pugilistics after working with campaigns of assorted Republicans for President and Governor by working with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, a mixed martial arts promoter as their communications director.
Cheung served in 2016 as director of rapid response for Trump's campaign for the Republican nomination and followed him into the presidential campaign and then into the White House, where he became executive assistant to the president at the same job in 2017.
He departed the White House in 2018 and founded his own company, which was retained by the Trump campaign for the race in 2020.
After several other assignments coaching others in different races, he went back to the 2024 Trump campaign.
He spent much of his time with the Trump campaign trying to quench fires ignited by his rants, for example, labeling his opponents "vermin" or declaring that illegal migrants "poisoned the blood of the nation."
He also made several insulting remarks, often of a personal nature, against Trump's opponents as well as the media.
He has yet to appoint a Press Secretary who will become the face of the administration from the press briefings on a daily basis.
Cheung will work behind the scene as director of communications, more so planning and running the media outreach and overseer of the speechwriting.
