Last year's G20 Summit hosted in India went beyond merely raising awareness about the group's significance; it fostered a sense of unity among various government bodies, emphasized K J Srinivasa, the Joint Secretary in the Government of India, during a recent meeting. Speaking at a gathering attended by over 150 expatriate and local Indian community leaders at the Consulate, Srinivasa reflected on the successful execution of the summit, an achievement that showcased India's competence on a global stage.
Srinivasa, who previously served as the Consul General for India at the same consulate between 2013 and 2016, expressed pride in India's handling of the G20 Summit. He commended the decision to extend the summit's reach beyond the capital city, Delhi, stating that holding events in diverse locations, including the North East, Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Hampi, and others, showcased the richness of India's heritage and culture.
Highlighting the strategic move to organize the summit across various regions, Srinivasa noted that it not only engaged the masses but also prompted a positive shift in the approach of state governments, irrespective of political affiliations. The collaborative effort, driven by the understanding that the summit was for the greater good of the country, led to unprecedented success.
Srinivasa drew attention to a notable trend in India — a "reverse migration" and investment scenario. He explained that individuals who had ventured abroad for opportunities were now returning to India, recognizing it as a land of new possibilities.
Expressing appreciation for the Indian diaspora's role, both locally and globally, Srinivasa applauded their efforts in preserving and promoting Indian culture and traditions, particularly in South Africa. He acknowledged the expatriates for making a foreign land their home while carrying the pride of their Indian heritage.
Touching upon India's humanitarian endeavors, Srinivasa emphasized the country's significant role in evacuating not only its citizens but also citizens of other nations from trouble spots worldwide. This, he stated, had contributed to India earning an admirable reputation, achieved with the active involvement and support of the diaspora.
Both Srinivasa and the current Consul General, Mahesh Kumar, regarded the meeting as a unique occasion, allowing a former Consul General to reconnect with the people he had previously interacted with. Kumar acknowledged the impressive turnout as a testament to the respect locals hold for Srinivasa based on his past interactions during his tenure.
