Sri Lanka will make a request for membership in BRICS at the outreach BRICS summit to be held in Kazan, Russia, Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath said here on Monday.
Speaking at an interaction with the Colombo-based diplomatic corps yesterday at the foreign affairs ministry, he said that because of the parliamentary election, he and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will not be able to attend the summit, but the secretary of foreign affairs will represent Sri Lanka and place on record request for membership.
He claimed he had already sent letters to the respective counterparts of BRICS member states seeking support, according to Xinhua news agency .
Sri Lanka views BRICS as an effective partnership to realize aspiration for mutually beneficial cooperation, peace and development through strengthened and inclusive multilateralism within the framework of the United Nations Charter, Herath explained.
