Sheikh Hasina’s Niece Tulip Siddiq Steps Down as UK Treasury Minister

Siddiq, who held the role responsible for financial services and fighting corruption, faced growing scrutiny over her connections with her aunt, who was ousted as prime minister of Bangladesh last year.

Tulip Siddiq, niece of former Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina, resigned as the UK's Treasury minister on Tuesday amid allegations of links to Bangladeshi finances, The New York Times reported.

Siddiq, who held the role responsible for financial services and fighting corruption, faced growing scrutiny over her connections with her aunt, who was ousted as prime minister of Bangladesh last year.

She, however has rejected the charges terming them as politically motivated, saying that she has not done anything wrong.

Siddiq, as the economic secretary to the Treasury took the post last July after Labour came into power, is required to ensure eradication of corruption from financial markets in Britain and reduce money laundering as well as other forms of illicit finance.

Following Siddiq's resignation, Reuters reported that British PM Keir Starmer had appointed Emma Reynolds as Economic Secretary to the Treasury.

Reynolds, 47, was elected to office in the 2024 national election, when Labour regained power after 14 years out of government. She represents the Wycombe constituency in southern England and previously served as a lawmaker for a different seat in central England between 2010 and 2019.
