Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that even after several rounds of negotiations between Russian and U.S. negotiators, the two nations were unable to agree on fundamental issues to solve the crisis in Ukraine.
Speaking with Kommersant, released on Tuesday, Lavrov said that Moscow remains receptive to talking to the U.S. but made a distinction between the current administration under President Joe Biden and the previous one under President Donald Trump.
Lavrov pointed out that, in contrast to the European Union nations and the UK, the Trump administration took a different line, endeavoring to identify the causes of the Ukrainian conflict. Lavrov asserted that the U.S. and the EU had orchestrated and financed the 2014 anti-constitutional coup in Kiev and caused the current confrontation between Russia and Ukraine. Lavrov commended the Trump administration for their "common sense" and declared an openness to mutually advantageous agreements where both countries' interests are aligned.
Yet Lavrov declared that Russia would not be manipulated or tricked into disadvantageous agreements. He added that while Russia is not against mutually advantageous agreements, it is wary of agreements that could be used to trap them. Lavrov also criticized the Biden administration, accusing it of what he termed the "death of globalization" and of the U.S. weaponizing the global financial system by way of sanctions on Russia.
