Russia to use nuclear weapons if attacked by Western missiles, says Dmitry Medvedev

In a Telegram post, Medvedev emphasized that such an attack on Russian launchers would not be perceived as an act of self-defense, but rather as a clear and direct justification for Russia to employ nuclear weapons against the offending state.

In response to recent proposals by the Ukrainian side to employ US-supplied long-range missiles to target Russian launchers on its own territory, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, issued a statement on Thursday suggesting that Russia might consider resorting to the use of nuclear weapons if its launchers are attacked by Western missiles.

In a Telegram post, Medvedev emphasized that such an attack on Russian launchers would not be perceived as an act of self-defense, but rather as a clear and direct justification for Russia to employ nuclear weapons against the offending state. He cited Russia's nuclear doctrine, which outlines the right to use nuclear weapons in response to aggression with conventional weapons that poses a threat to the very existence of the state.

The Deputy Chairman expressed concern over the proposed use of US-supplied long-range missiles by Ukraine, highlighting the potential consequences and invoking Russia's strategic approach to national defense. Medvedev's statement underscores the seriousness with which Russia views the protection of its strategic assets and the extent to which it may consider using nuclear capabilities in response to perceived threats.
