Russia repels massive Ukrainian drone attack overnight, says Defence Ministry

According to Sunday morning's statement of the Ministry, more than a dozen UAVs were shot down over different Russian regions.

The Russian air defence has intercepted and destroyed 158 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions over the past night, the Russian Defence Ministry said in a Sunday statement.

Nine drones were targeting Moscow and the Moscow region, the statement noted. Another 46 were destroyed over the Kursk region, 34 over Bryansk, 28 over Voronezh, and 14 over Belgorod. A number of others were shot down over nine other Russian regions.

Drones that were shot down have caused a fire at a Moscow refinery and one at a power plant in the Tver region, which borders Moscow, according to local officials cited by the Xinhua news agency.

The authorities later said the fire in both regions had been contained, with no injuries reported.

It also became a target for such an attack, with seven drones shot down over the Moscow region and two more above the capital itself, the statement added as reported by RT.

According to the Ministry, eight UAVs were destroyed in the Ryazan region, five in the Kaluga region, four in the Lipetsk region, and three in the Tula region.

One or two drones were also shot down above the Tambov, Smolensk, Orel, Tver, and Ivanovo regions, it added.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said at least 11 drones were destroyed near or inside the capital during the raid from Ukraine.

Two UAVs were shot down in the vicinity of the Moscow Oil Refinery in the southeast of the city, he said.

One of them fallen onto the roof of some engineering building, the mayor said, adding that the firefighters were extinguishing the blaze.

Three more UAVs also targeted the Kashira State District Power Plant, Moscow region's Kashira city district chief Mikhail Shuvalov said. He added that no casualties or damage had occurred.

In January, Kyiv stepped up plane-type drone sorties into Russia, primarily to destroy key energy infrastructure, but also striking private residences. Moscow responded by adding Ukrainian powerplants to the list of legitimate military targets.

Since then, the vast majority of Ukraine's non-nuclear generation capacity was either taken out or disabled by Russian strikes.

In mid-August, the significant UAV attack by Ukraine targeted Russian territory, destroying 117 UAVs with air defences. Another raid was just over a week ago when 45 drones took part, of which 11 targeted Moscow, according to Russia's Defence Ministry.
