Ukrainian forces targeted the Taganrog military airfield in Russia's Rostov region with a missile strike using advanced Western precision weaponry, Russia’s Defence Ministry reported on Wednesday.
The ministry stated that six US-manufactured ATACMS ballistic missiles were deployed in the attack. Of these, two were intercepted, while the remaining missiles were redirected by Russian electronic warfare systems, according to a report by Xinhua news agency.
Fragments from the intercepted missiles caused casualties among personnel stationed at the airfield, the ministry added.
“This use of Western long-range weaponry will not go unanswered, and appropriate retaliatory measures will be implemented,” the statement read.
The attack follows a significant policy change by the United States in November, when Ukraine was granted authorization to use American long-range missiles for strikes within Russian territory. Russia has consistently condemned such actions, warning they intensify tensions surrounding the ongoing conflict.
