Re-arrest of Former Pakistan Foreign Minister Qureshi in Connection with May Violence Case

Qureshi, expressing his innocence, claimed political victimization and criticized what he perceived as a mockery of the Supreme Court's order. The violence on May 9 had erupted after the arrest of PTI founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan in a corruption case at the Islamabad High Court.

Senior PTI leader and former Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi was reportedly arrested on Wednesday from Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail in connection with the May 9 violence case. The arrest followed Qureshi's recent bail approval in the cipher case, with his detention on Tuesday under the maintenance of public order law.

Sources suggest that Qureshi was arrested in connection with the GHQ attack case and is expected to appear before an anti-terrorism court. Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner Hasan Waqar Cheema revoked the detention order under the maintenance of order law, leading to Qureshi's arrest.

While the Supreme Court approved Qureshi's bail in the cipher case, his detention in connection with the May 9 incidents occurred before a special court judge issued his release orders. Rawalpindi police stated that they were directed to interrogate Qureshi regarding the May 9 cases, emphasizing his involvement in violent protests. Despite bail in the cipher case, a 15-day detention order was issued on the grounds of his alleged role in anti-state activities and potential resumption of such actions upon release.

Qureshi has faced multiple arrests in connection with alleged PTI-led protests and the ransacking of state properties earlier in May.
