Qatar, instrumental in brokering a four-day humanitarian pause between Israel and Hamas, announced that the effective date of the ceasefire will be disclosed within 24 hours. The statement emphasized that the pause, lasting for four days, is subject to potential extensions.
This development follows the approval by the Israeli cabinet of an agreement with Hamas to release 50 hostages held in Gaza since the October 7 attack. The release will be conducted over four days during a pause in the fighting. The Israeli Prime Minister's Office stated that the government is committed to bringing home all hostages, eliminating Hamas, and ensuring no new threats emerge from Gaza.
The agreement also permits the entry of humanitarian, medical, and fuel aid into all parts of the Gaza Strip via Egypt's Rafah crossing.
While some opposed the partial hostage deal, warning of complications and disruptions to the military offensive against Hamas, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed skepticism and reiterated Israel's commitment to achieving its objectives.
An IDF spokesman emphasized that the military is awaiting instructions from the Israeli government and will continue fighting until directed otherwise. The spokesman expressed concern that Hamas might use the pause to resupply and regroup.
U.S. President Joe Biden welcomed the deal, expressing gratitude for the release of hostages and emphasizing ongoing efforts to bring home additional American hostages.
This development follows a breakthrough on November 12 when Hamas provided identifying information about hostages, including children and toddlers, who had been taken captive on October 7. Israeli authorities estimate at least 236 hostages are held in Gaza.
