Reports have stated that Bangladesh's Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, resigned and fled the country amidst huge protests against her government, which have claimed more than 106 lives since Sunday. No formal announcement has been made yet, confirming her exit from Dhaka or her resignation.
According to the private news channel Jamuna, this resignation has reportedly been compelled due to the huge-scale protests sparked by dissatisfaction with a contentious quota system alloting 30 percent of government positions to relatives of veterans from the 1971 War of Independence.
Reports suggest the chief of the army is likely to address the public shortly. In a bid to quell the unrest earlier, the government had imposed a total black out on the internet amidst protests by those calling on citizens to join what they said would be a "Long March to Dhaka." The broadband internet was restored at about 1:15 PM Monday because of a verbal order from a government agency.
