Political Tensions Escalate in Maldives as Ruling and Opposition Parties Engage in Blame Game Following Prosecutor General's Attack

Tensions have escalated in the Maldives after Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem was attacked by unidentified assailants on Monday, leading to a blame game between the ruling and opposition parties. Local media and social media reports describe the incident as politically motivated, with former Maldivian president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, also the interim leader of the largest opposition outfit, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), condemning the attack. Solih urged the government to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice.

The MDP, in a statement, condemned the attack on Shameem and raised concerns about the alleged connections between top government officials and criminal groups, resulting in violent assaults on state officials. The opposition party accused President Muizzu's administration of failing to provide adequate protection to officials carrying out constitutional duties.

The MDP called on the government to sever alleged ties with criminal groups, conduct a thorough investigation into the attack on Shameem, and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

The Prosecutor General's Office reported that Shameem was attacked with a weapon by two individuals on a motorbike. While the type of weapon used has not been specified, the Maldives National Defense Force has increased security for Shameem.

After being discharged from the hospital, Prosecutor Shameem expressed gratitude for the support on his Facebook page, mentioning that he was attacked in the morning, suffered a fractured left hand, and is now back home with family. The government condemned the attack, vowing to use all available resources to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice.
