PM Modi Receives Ghana’s Top Civilian Honor in Landmark Ceremony

The award was handed over by Ghana President John Dramani Mahama to PM Modi personally in the official ceremony.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded Ghana's top national honor, the 'Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana'. The award commemorates his "distinguished statesmanship and powerful global leadership."

The award was handed over by Ghana President John Dramani Mahama to PM Modi personally in the official ceremony.

"Honoured to be awarded with 'The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana'," the Prime Minister tweeted on X.

Sharing the statement, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, "A testament to the long and deep India-Ghana relations. President @JDMahama bestowed upon PM @narendramodi 'The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana', the national honor of Ghana. dedicated the honor to the 1.4 billion citizens of India and the historic and deep rooted India-Ghana relations. He thanked the government and people of Ghana for this singular honor."

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also went to X to praise the honour: "Fitting that PM @narendramodi has been awarded Ghana's highest national honour -- the 'Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana'. It is a reflection of his consistent efforts in building the voice of the Global South. Also testament to our cooperation and friendship with Ghana."

In accordance with an official MEA statement, Prime Minister Modi accepted the honor on behalf of all 1.4 billion Indians and dedicated it to the aspirations of India's youth, its diversity, and the unbreakable bond between India and Ghana.

He expressed his warm gratitude to the people of Ghana and their government for this sentimental recognition.

Underlining the common democratic ideals and common heritage of the two countries, the Prime Minister underscored that the honour not just strengthens the bilateral friendship but also places upon him the added responsibility to further strengthen the relationship. The MEA further added that Prime Minister Modi considers this award as a strong boost in raising the diplomatic relationship between the two nations to a higher level.

Emitting optimism regarding the future of bilateral relations, PM Modi declared that his historic visit to Ghana would inject fresh energy in India-Ghana cooperation.

Before the award ceremony took place, PM Modi and President Mahama discussed at length, leading to the promotion of India-Ghana relations to a comprehensive partnership.

This visit marks the first time in three decades that an Indian Prime Minister has traveled to Ghana, and it serves as the inaugural stop in Modi's five-nation diplomatic tour.
