Important during his two-day sojourn to Guyana, Prime Minister Narendra Modi graced a touching religious function that was sure to set the cultural chemistry between India and Guyana on a boiling roll.
As part of his visit on its second day, Prime Minister Modi attended a Ram Bhajan (Devotional song) at the Promenade Garden in Georgetown, the capital of Guyana.
This visit to the Promenade Garden was, therefore, especially important as it underscored the deep presence of the Indian diaspora in Guyana, many of whose inhabitants trace their ancestry from India.
Ram Bhajan is another spiritual and religious activity in the persona of Lord Ram among the Indians, however more specifically Hindus.
The participation of Prime Minister Modi in this event, thus, proved to be a spiritual gesture, as well as a symbol for unifying the country and sharing cultural heritage.
The area was open to everybody, regardless of religion or ethnicity, making it a religious occasion that was open to all. It thus attracted many members of the local Indian community and other Georgetown residents to join in the prayers and hymns, making the event a celebration of Guyana's multicultural society.
PM Modi’s involvement in this religious event reinforced the importance of cultural diplomacy in strengthening bilateral ties between India and Guyana.
In his visit, PM Modi focused on common values of peace, harmony, and progress between the two nations. His visit to Guyana, within a broader endeavour to bring more Caribbean countries closer to India, was intended to strengthen cooperation in all the areas of trade, development, and the diaspora.
This act of joining in for a Ram Bhajan further added to the depth of this diplomatic interaction, as it was highly synchronized with the Indian-origin people in the country.
PM Modi has already described his visit — the first by an Indian PM to Guyana — as a "historic milestone" for the ties between the two countries. Thanking Guyana's President Irfaan Ali for the warm welcome, PM Modi claimed a personal relationship with Guyana, acknowledging that he had visited 24 years back as a common citizen.
The visit is historic as it symbolises the spiritual and cultural ties that bind India and Guyana, much more than the political ones. Officials say it is one of the most memorable moments in this spectacular journey.
