The call came from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday in the wake of his historic visit to Ukraine last week.
"Spoke to President Putin today. Discussed steps to further solidify Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. Exchanged views on the Russia-Ukraine conflict and my visit to Ukraine. Reiterated India's strong commitment to support an early, abiding, and peaceful resolution of the conflict," PM Modi tweeted X.
On Monday evening, Prime Minister Modi had called up US President Joe Biden in connection with the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. The prime minister underlined India's consistent position in support of dialogue and diplomacy in an endeavor to find a resolution to this conflict.
"During the discussion on the situation in Ukraine, Prime Minister Modi briefed President Biden on his recent visit to Ukraine. He reiterated India's consistent position in favour of dialogue and diplomacy and conveyed full support for an early return of peace and stability," the PMO said in a late-night statement after the telephone conversation between the two leaders.
Earlier on Monday, the Prime Minister had spoken with Australian PM Anthony Albanese as both leaders not only discussed bilateral relations but also cooperation in the multilateral fora, including Quad grouping, which also comprises the United States and Japan.
After PM Modi's visit to Kyiv last Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had said that India supports his country's national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
"Today, history was made. The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi paid his first visit to Ukraine since our country's independence on the eve of our Independence Day. Today we agreed on four documents regarding medical field, agricultural cooperation, humanitarian relations and culture between Ukraine and India", reported Zelensky after the end of diplomatic engagements with PM Modi.
PM Modi, during his talks with Zelensky, reaffirmed India's principled position and commitment to a peaceful settlement toward the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. He also reiterated that India was ready to contribute in "all possible ways" to facilitate the early return of peace in the region.
"My visit to Ukraine is historic. I came to this great nation with a desire to deepen the friendship of India and Ukraine further. I had useful discussions with President Zelensky. India is always strongly opposed to conflict. I would like to thank the Government and the people of Ukraine for the hospitality extended during this visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said after the bilateral discussions in Kyiv.
Last month, during his visit to Moscow, Prime Minister Modi had elaborate discussions with the Russian President to find a solution and end the conflict in Ukraine.
Recalling the long history of friendship and good bonds between the two countries, Putin also recognized the initiative of PM Modi to stop the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
"We had the chance to discuss practically all issues informally. I am grateful for," he said, "the attention you are paying to the most acute problems, including with regard to seeking at least some solutions for overcoming the crisis situation in Ukraine and, of course, first and foremost, doing this exclusively through peaceful means."
