Security officials said that the shooter escaped right after the attack. A complete inquiry is under way, with police examining several lines of inquiry, including that of an honour-related offence—a widespread problem in many areas of Pakistan.

"The suspect entered the house, fired several rounds, and fled," a police official was reported to have said by Pakistani media. Sana was hit by two bullets and was killed instantly.

Sana, who belonged to a prominent social activist family, was popular for her vlogs detailing everyday life, the culture of Chitral, women's rights, educational awareness, and motivational messages targeting the youth.

The incident has provoked painful reminders of previous instances of violence against vocal women in Pakistan, such as the 2012 attack on Malala Yousafzai by the Taliban for promoting girls' education.

In a comparable episode earlier this year, a teenage Pakistani girl was killed by her father because of her behavior on TikTok. The family had just returned from the U.S., and the father initially blamed unidentified people for killing the teen.
