Pakistani Officials Assure Election Body of Adequate Arrangements for Peaceful Polls

Senior officials, including chief secretaries and inspectors general of the four provinces, Islamabad’s chief commissioner, members and secretary of the Election Commission, and representatives from other law enforcement agencies, affirmed that all necessary arrangements were in place to handle any challenges during the elections.

In a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, Pakistan's top government and security officials have reassured the Election Commission of their preparedness to conduct general elections on February 8, despite potential threats from militants across the country.

Chief Election Commissioner Raja emphasized the need to ensure the safety and security of both candidates and voters. Creating a conducive environment for elections was highlighted as essential, enabling citizens to exercise their right to vote without fear.

Despite threat alerts in certain areas, officials pledged unwavering commitment to peaceful elections. The meeting discussed measures such as the installation of CCTV cameras at sensitive polling stations and timely fund allocation to relevant agencies. Raja directed a focus on the security of political leaders and voters, with strict adherence to the election code of conduct.

Specific concerns from different regions were addressed, including the formation of peace committees at polling stations in troubled Balochistan and the need for clear policy instructions on changes in the allotment of election symbols in Punjab.

The chief election commissioner stressed the importance of adhering to the election schedule, especially regarding the printing of ballot papers. The interior secretary reported the establishment of control rooms at the federal level and assured that all necessary measures were in place to support the Election Commission in holding peaceful elections.

Addressing the shortage of police personnel, officials assured additional support from other security agencies if required. Raja underscored that strict action would be taken against any candidate or individual violating the law and the code of conduct during the electoral process.
