Severe winter storms in California leave 16 dead
The death toll reached on 16 Tuesday after two motorists died in a crash earlier in the day on Highway 99 in Tulare county when a tree that had been struck by lightning fell on the road, Xinhua news agency reported. This toll is higher than the lives lost in wildfires in the past two years combined.
Last king of Greece passes away
The last monarch of Greece had been hospitalized for several days in a local hospital where he died on Tuesday, Xinhua news agency quoted Greek national broadcaster ERT as saying in a report. Constantine II became king in 1964, but was forced into exile after a failed counter-coup against the military dictatorship which took over in 1967.
Brazilian authorities order arrest of top officials over capital riots
In a statement on Tuesday, the Attorney General's office said the officials include Brasalia's former public security chief Anderson Torres and others "responsible for acts and omissions" leading to Sunday's riots, reports the BBC. As a result of the violence, police commander Colonel Fabio Augusto was dismissed from his role, while the capital city's Governor Ibaneis Rocha has been removed for a period of 90 days by the Supreme Court.
