Guterres calls for unified UNSC over Israel-Palestine conflict

Asked what the Secretary-General expects from Sunday's emergency meeting of the Security Council on the violent escalation, Guterres' spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Friday: "What we would like to see is a strong, unified voice for de-escalation, for a cessation of hostilities and a push to get the parties back on track to find a political solution to this conflict that has been going on and on and on."
Covid 19 Update: Global caseload tops 161.5mn

In its latest update on Saturday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 161,548,671 and 3,352,915, respectively. The US continues to be the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 32,893,031 and 585,224, respectively, according to the CSSE.
Israel Gaza violence: Clashes spread to West Bank

At least 10 Palestinians are reported to have died in the West Bank unrest, while hundreds have been injured. Israeli forces used teargas, rubber bullets and live fire, as Palestinians threw petrol bombs, the BBC reported. At least 122 people have also been killed in Gaza and eight have died in Israel since fighting began on Monday.
4 killed in Kabul mosque blast during prayers

The blast took place at Haji Bakhshi Mosque in Qala-e-Murad Bek area, Shakardara district, TOLO News quoted the police as saying. A security official said that the Imam of the mosque was among the injured persons. The official said the bomb was placed inside the mosque. No group so far has claimed responsibility for the explosion.
Israel reports tunnel system destruction amid violence

Army spokesperson Jonathan Conricus said about 40 tanks participated in the 40-minute mission, reports dpa news agency. Conricus said the tunnel system, named Metro, operated as a sort of "city under the city". The extent of the damage to the system was unclear. The tunnel network is vital in the Gaza Strip for shifting goods and people in and out.
Australia government can detain refugees indefinitely under new laws

The governing coalition and opposition Labor Party on Thursday joined forces to vote the Migration Amendment Bill into law, reports Xinhua news agency. The laws give the government the power to detain indefinitely refugees who have had their visas cancelled but cannot be returned to their country of origin because they would face persecution there.
9 wounded in US shooting

The shooting took place at about 7 p.m. on Thursday in the southeastern neighbourhood of Washington Park, the reports said citing local police. The shooting began with young men shooting from a vehicle at a home and those inside the home then returned fire, Xinhua news agency quoted the police as saying.
UNSC to hold open meeting on Israel-Palestine violence

Zhang Jun, China's Permanent Representative to the UN, tweeted that the meeting will be held at 10 a.m. on Sunday, reports Xinhua news agency. "China is deeply concerned about the escalation of tensions in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. UNSC should act now and send a strong message. Regret a Friday meeting was blocked by one member," said the tweet.
Trial of 3 ex-police officers charged over George Floyd's death delayed

The officers, identified as Thomas Lane, J. Kueng and Tou Thao, were scheduled to face trial on August 23, reports Xinhua news agency. Judge Peter Cahill said on Thursday he changed the date so the federal case can go forward first. Their co-defendant, Derek Chauvin, has already been convicted of murder and manslaughter counts.
1st active-duty service member charged over US Capitol riots

Major Christopher Warnagiris, 40, is accused of forcing his way inside the Capitol by pushing through a line of officers guarding the building's East Rotunda doors, Xinhua news agency quoted the Department as saying on Thursday. Video footage showed Warnagiris keeping the door open for others to get in and later pushing a Capitol Police officer who tried to close it, the Department said.
