Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the 37-year-old youngest daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and current leader of the Pheu Thai Party, has been appointed as Thailand's new prime minister.
She steps into the role following the removal of Srettha Thavisin by the Constitutional Court on Wednesday, which was due to ethical violations related to the appointment of a cabinet member with a criminal record.
Paetongtarn is going to be the youngest and the second woman to hold the prime minister position in Thailand.
A mother of two, she will also be the fourth member from the Shinawatra family to assume the position of prime minister. Her predecessors were her father, Thaksin Shinawatra, her uncle Somchai Wongsawat, who was Thaksin's brother-in-law, and her aunt Yingluck Shinawatra.
Other than this, Paetongtarn is also devoted to the Pheu Thai Party as its existing Chief Director of Innovation and Inclusiveness, Deputy Chairperson of the Soft Power Strategic Committee, Deputy Chairperson of the National Health System Development Committee, and present party leader.
Yingluck Shinawatra was the first female prime minister, as well as the youngest, to take office in Thailand in over 60 years; however, her tenure was cut short by a Constitutional Court ruling on May 7, 2014.
