In the backdrop of continued US-India tensions, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he would provide some "advice" to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on dealing with US President Donald Trump but underscored that he would do it privately as both leaders are his "terrific" friends.
"PM Modi and Trump are great friends of mine. I would offer some tips on how to handle Trump to PM Modi, but in private," Netanyahu said, expressing his hope to travel to India "soon."
Netanyahu characterized the foundation of US-India relations as "very solid" and urged both countries to look for common ground on the tariff conflict.
The foundation of the relationship is extremely strong. It will be in the interest of India and the US to reach a middle path and sort out the tariff matter. This resolution will be beneficial for Israel too, since both nations are our friends," he stated.
Earlier this week, President Trump imposed a further 25 percent tariff on Indian exports, doubling the fine to 50 percent, due to India's continued imports of Russian crude oil. This is the highest Trump tariff in his recent list, followed by Brazil.
India has condemned the action as "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable," stating that it will affect crucial industries such as textiles and marine exports.
In return, Prime Minister Modi dispatched a strong message highlighting that India will never ever make concessions on the interests of its fishermen and farmers. Accepting the personal price tag, he asserted his willingness to accept the price for the benefit of these groups.
"Farmers' interest is our priority. India will never do any compromise with its farmers, livestock owners, and fishermen. And I know I must personally pay a heavy price for this, but I am willing. India is willing, for the country's farmers, fishermen, and livestock owners," Modi said.
