In a new video address, President Joe Biden urged the American people to cool tempers following an assassin's attempt on his right-wing counterpart, former President Donald Trump. He implored the citizens to "lower the temperature" in regard to political discourse and to "take a step back."
"We are not enemies, we are friends, neighbours, co-workers and most importantly we are fellow Americans, we must stand together. Yesterday's shooting in Donald Trump's rally in Pennsylvania calls on all of us to take a step back," Biden stated in this rare address on Sunday.
As for Trump's condition, the President remarked, "Fortunately, Trump is safe and recovering well. I spoke to him last night."
The 81-year-old leader said, emphasizing that "violence should not become normalized" in the United States, "There is no room for this kind of violence in America, or any violence at all." He remarked that the present political climate has "become quite heated" andStatements by the US President: it's time to cool things down.
Biden conceded that "strong disagreements are an inherent part of our democracy," explaining that politics should "never become a literal battlefield or, heaven forbid, a killing field."
"We debate and disagree, we argue about the character of candidates, their records, issues, agendas, and visions for our country. But in America, we resolve our differences at the ballot box," he added.
Hate must not have a safe harbour," the President said. "We can't allow misinformation to fund its face or foreign powers to sow our divisions to sap our strength for their own objectives. Our first and most important task is unity in America."
Speaking about his shooting investigation, Biden indicated that so far, investigators do not know what had motivated the shooter and if there is any information on his regard and affinity, be it he had acted alone or with aid.
He also sent out his condolences to the mourning families of the victims of the rally shooting.
