Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is set to contest the upcoming general election from the Manshera NA-15 constituency. Despite objections raised by a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader, Azam Swati, Nawaz Sharif's nomination papers were cleared by the Returning Officer (RO). Swati argued that Sharif, having been disqualified for life by the Supreme Court, should not be permitted to stand for election.
The reports indicate that the RO rejected the objections and cleared Nawaz Sharif to run in the election. If the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), led by Nawaz Sharif, emerges victorious in the February 8 election, it would mark his fourth election to the highest office.
Nawaz Sharif has recently been acquitted of all corruption charges by Pakistani courts, a development attributed to the influence of the powerful establishment in Pakistan. His return from London to take a leading role in Pakistani politics has been facilitated by the country's establishment.
