Mumbai-Born Minita Sanghvi Declares Candidacy for New York State Senate Seat

Sanghvi, a Commissioner of Finances in the Saratoga Springs city council, commenced her second two-year term this year after being re-elected in November. Minita Sanghvi, a Democrat born in Mumbai, has officially declared her candidacy for the 44th State Senate District in New York’s Capital Region, currently held by Republican Jim Tedisco. If successful, Sanghvi would make history as the first gay woman and the first Indian-American to represent the district, encompassing Saratoga County, Niskayuna, and the city of Schenectady.

“I’m running for State Senate because we deserve better,” Sanghvi stated in a press release. Emphasizing her non-political background, she described herself as a parent, business educator, and dedicated public servant committed to fiscal responsibility.

Sanghvi's priorities include securing infrastructure funding for bridges and roads, increasing state aid to counties and cities, attracting green and high-tech jobs to communities, and establishing an innovation corridor connecting Schenectady and Saratoga.

“I believe in protecting rights and freedoms for all residents, no matter where they live or what political party they belong to,” Sanghvi affirmed, pledging to defend women’s access to healthcare, uphold LGBTQ rights, and ensure equal opportunities for everyone.

Born into a family of entrepreneurs in Mumbai, Sanghvi moved to the US in 2001 and became a citizen in 2010. Having earned an MBA from Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies and a PhD from the Bryan School of Business and Economics at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, she has a diverse professional background, including roles at Leo Burnett, WalMart, and CARQUEST.

In Saratoga Springs, Sanghvi has been actively involved in civic service, contributing to the Charter Review Commission, founding the Human Rights Task Force, and serving on the Saratoga Springs Public Library for five years. With approximately 226,000 active registered voters in the 44th State Senate District, Sanghvi aims to bring her experience and commitment to public service to the forefront in the upcoming election.
