First, it had planned to assassinate Haniyeh when he attended the then-Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's funeral in May. This, however, was scrapped at the last minute in view of some unexpected developments.

Sources in the office of the Defence Minister of Israel told IANS that following the killing, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) were put on high alert as a precautionary measure as one fears an attack in retaliation by Iran or its proxies. The IDF has also strengthened its defenses along the southern and northern borders of the country to guard against any eventuality of an attack by Hamas, Hezbollah, or Houthis, it is learnt.

According to the Arab media, high-level agents are said to have been behind Haniyeh's killing, and the Iranian regime is said to be in shock over his killing. Reports say that the Iranian intelligence services have launched a massive crackdown on those involved in the operation to try to uncover Mossad involvement.
