A devastating Monday afternoon shooting incident occurred in Midtown Manhattan, leaving one NYPD officer dead and three civilians wounded.
The perpetrator, identified as Shane D Tamura from Las Vegas, Nevada, was recorded on CCTV footage that circulated rapidly across social media platforms. Tamura, in the photo, appears to be clad in body armor and equipped with an AR-15-style rifle.
The attacker escaped from the first scene of the shooting and went inside the Blackstone building, 342 Park Avenue—an office building that also contains the headquarters of the NFL. The building was locked down after the officers chased the suspect. Tamura is said to have gone all the way to the 33rd floor, where he eventually took his own life.
The NYPD officer shot to death has been named as Didarul Islam, who served for four years in the force.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams spoke about the incident, affirming the fact that there is an ongoing investigation into the shooting.
"New Yorkers: there is an ongoing active shooter investigation in Midtown as we speak," Adams stated. "Please use due precautions for safety if you are in the area and do not venture out if you are close to Park Avenue and East 51st Street."
The NYPD first alerted the public to the safety advisory through X (formerly Twitter), advising people to steer clear of the affected area.
Because of police activity, avoid the area around East 52 Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue. Emergency vehicles and delays can be expected in the area," the department tweeted.
As of this writing, the investigation continues, with increased police presence in and around Midtown. Authorities are trying to figure out Tamura's motive and any potential connections to the victims.
