According to local media, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that he would not appoint a new prime minister until the end of the Olympic Games, fearing "disruption." In an interview with France 2, Macron asserted that the current government, with huge inputs into the preparation of the Games, must not be changed if they have to be a success. One of the major focuses of the administration is the Games, which are projected to attract nearly 10,500 athletes and millions of spectators.
Macron warned of "disorder" if there were a change in leadership during that period and called for political parties to make compromises within the parliament, where there is no clear majority.
On July 8, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal resigned after the ruling party failed to win a majority in last month's snap legislative elections. Macron accepted Attal's resignation on July 16 but requested that he continue to lead a caretaker government until a new administration is established.
